Its omnidirectional facades all face inward, forming an amphitheatre: a stage where the latest in shopping is experienced like a test run, a catwalk. The sculptural art becomes an actor, and the visitors both audience and performers. We propose concepts that mirror these surroundings and play with what shopping ultimately is: a mirror of your personality. Two concepts are shown. 01. A series of spinning tops populating the art footprint, to be played with and experienced spatially through the different ways they reflect their surroundings. 01b. A single, large spinning top with a fluted spiral pattern that gives the static sculpture visual movement. Its tilt is both familiar and unnerving, calling on childhood memories while staying true to the luxury of the mall. 02. A series of three-dimensional discs forming a tapestry of mirrors, a patchwork of the surroundings. After dark the piece becomes central to the architecture, one big canvas bathed in light from the surrounding lamps and cast back onto the walls. The effect is highly impactful, yet analog and low-maintenance. *All concepts aim to combine all elements - art, architecture, lighting and audience - into one unified experience.

That impulse - astonishment, offered without explanation - is one I recognise in Pierre du Pont himself. At the 1876 Centennial Exposition and the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, he stood before halls of industrial water pumps and illuminated fountains and was astonished; that astonishment came home with him. At Longwood he worked without a masterplan, adding one feature at a time, starting with the plain Flower Garden Walk, each addition shaped by what the land already offered and pushed forward by whatever new wonder he'd just encountered abroad. It's a way of working I recognise in my own practice: build small, test it, let the next piece follow only once the last one has proven itself.
